The Cockney Dialect is one of the oldest and most colorful of the British Dialects.  It was certainly spoken in Shakespeare’s time, and while certain characteristics of Cockney can be present in other British Dialects, it is generally associated with London.  In fact in the theatre today when a “London Dialect” is requested, it means Cockney which has moved a little up market.

The tone is adenoidal or denasal.  There is very little lip movement and the sound is placed in the back of the mouth, under the soft palate.
