German

Vowels and Diphthongs        Consonants

There are actually several dialects of spoken German which are quite different. The sounds of German spoken in Austria, Switzerland and Bavaria in southern Germany are different from the German spoken in Berlin and Frankfurt. Most German speakers in plays or film who are professionals speak hoch deutch, or high German, which like is like R.P. in British English.

Note: Most students in German schools are taught British English and so would speak English using British ɑː (ah) vowel for words using the ‘ask list’ such as France, can’t, dance, grass, etc.
